Matterik --
You said that you feel Herodotus mixed fact with fiction in his account of history. Cannot the same be said about Toynbee? Was Toynbee present during the Inquisition? Was he at the Battle of Waterloo? Herodotus himself admitted that his historical accounts include that which was told to him. Cannot the same also be true of Toynbee? Whose books/documents have Toynbee used? How profound is that? The profane will never know the whole truth, so be satisfied with what you get. It is all about CONTROL.
